Orthopaedic Surgery & Neurology
Our orthopaedic and neurology referral service is led by Dr Roberto Bergamaschi, an RCVS recognised advanced practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and Certificate Holder in Small Animal Orthopaedic, and consultant in Small Animal Neurology.
As a guide we offer services including:
Orthopaedic Surgery
- Lameness investigation and treatment with access to an onsite CT scanner
- Elbow dysplasia diagnosis and management with Distal Ulna Osteotomy, Bi-Oblique Dynamic Ulna Osteotomy, Arthroscopy-drive sub-total coronoidectomy, Uni-compartmental Elbow replacement in selected cases.
- Management of Humeral Intercondylar Fixure with HIRS system
- Hip Dysplasia diagnosis and management with Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis and Duple Pelvic Osteotomy in selected cases, and assessment for Total Hip Replacement.
- Arthroscopy
- Management of cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency by CORA-CCWO, TTA, CBLO, TPLO, based on stifle anatomy studies to better re-establish stifle stability
- Patellar luxation surgery from grade I to IV using classic surgical techniques and advanced corrective osteotomy if required
- Shoulder, carpal and tarsal arthrodesis
- Fracture repair
- Advanced corrective osteotomies for bone deformity using 3D evaluation and customized implant
- Limb sparring surgery for bone cancer in selected cases
- Resurfacing joint surgery for OCD lesion (stifles-shoulder) in addition to the classic surgical procedures
- Management of Achille’s Tendon Disease
Spinal Surgery
- Spinal surgery after full neurological and orthopaedic assessment and the benefit of our 64 slice CT scanner
- Hemilaminectomies/mini-hemilaminectomies
- Ventral slots
- Dorsal laminectomy and L7-S1 foraminotomy for lumbo-sacral disease and L7-S1 stabilization using 3D customized implant if required
- Spinal fractures
Neurology
- Management of epilepsy-seizures*
- Management of vestibular, cerebellar, and forebrain syndrome
- Management of peripheric nerves and muscles disease
All spinal cases receive intensive hospitalisation peri-operatively including physiotherapy.
All our orthopaedic and spinal cases receive at least 24 hour round the clock care from our registered veterinary nurses and on call surgeon.
*NB: at this stage we cannot manage patients which require intensive neurological care such as epilepticus status, cluster seizures and comatose status.
Soft Tissue Surgery
Our soft tissue referral service is led by Donald Yool, a European and RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery, and one of the most experienced soft tissue surgeons in Scotland.
This service offers management of surgical conditions of the body other than the nervous and musculoskeletal system. Areas covered include ear, nose, and throat, cardiothoracic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, urogenital, mass removal and skin reconstructive surgeries.
As well as accepting routine surgical referrals, the soft tissue team also plays a vital role in the management of complex cases that require a multi-disciplinary approach, to ensure that an individual animal receives the treatment they need.

- Abdomenal Surgery eg splenectomy, cystotomy, multiple gut biopsy
- Anal Gland Sacculectomy
- Hernia Repair Surgery
- Lymph Node Removal
- Maxillectomy and Mandibulectomy
- Salivary Mucocoele Management
- Stick Injury Management
- Surgical oncology including complicated mass removals
- Total Ear Canal Ablation and Lateral Bulla Osteotomy
- Urinary and reproductive tract surgeries
